Why does Hollywood have a habit of releasing two films centring on a similar topic at more or less the same time? We had the famous clash of end of the world movies 'Armageddon' and 'Deep Impact' in 1998 as well as insect tales 'Bug's Life' and 'Antz' the same year, magician flicks 'The Prestige' and 'The Illusionist' fought it out in 2006 and there were even two volcano movies in 1997 with 'Dante's Peak' and 'Volcano'. I don't know why studios decide to fight against each other like this but it seems Universal and Relativity Media are going head to head with there Snow White movies; 'Snow White And The Huntsman' and 'Mirror Mirror' respectively. They are even going as far as releasing trailers for each a couple days apart; check them out.
Lets just say one shows slightly more potential than the other (its not 'Mirror Mirror').
'Snow White And The Huntsman' stars Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron and is a very dark take on the classic fairytale, which begs the question does it need to be dark? Actually, who cares because it looks pretty damn good despite the presence of moody faced Stewart. Theron looks suitable evil as the queen, Hemsworth seems to be playing Thor again (not a bad thing) and it seems very "actiony", which makes me want to see this...a Snow White movie. I never thought I would want to do that. It's slated for a June 2012 release so add it to growing list of films to watch out for.
'Mirror Mirror' on the other hand does not look so cool. It looks like the kind of vile sh*t reserved for the Disney channel, if not worse. Julia Roberts is hamming it up in a role that makes me want to scratch my eyes out with shards of that mirror and poor Armie Hammer is getting slapped by a dwarf *sigh*. And then there is the "Say hello to my little friend" joke at the end of the trailer, which immediately makes me say "F*CK YOU!" That joke is such an indicator of a bad movie nowadays and they use it in the trailer to get people to watch the it!!!!!! I dread to think what they didn't show. Regardless this piece of crap is out next year, not that you will go and see it.
