Denzel Washington is usually at his best when he plays a charismatic villain or an anti hero like Alonso in 'Training Day' or Frank Lucas in Ridley Scott's 'American Gangster'. So with the release a trailer for new action thriller 'Safe House' it's good to see Denzel playing a bad guy again. He plays a rogue CIA agent who is kept in a safe house under the watch of rookie agent Ryan Reynolds, until some men come looking for Denzel. See it for yourself below.
If Denzel wasn't in this I probably wouldn't be interested, but he is one those actors whose projects you to take notice of. 'Safe House' looks like pretty standard action movie fare, but the fact that Washington is involved makes me want to see it. Add in Ryan Reynolds (who needs a box office hit), Brendan Gleeson, Vera Farmiga and Sam Shepard and you have a more than serviceable cast. Hopefully 'Safe House' will be slightly smarter than the trailer portrays it, with heavy focus on car chases and explosions rather than the dynamic between Washington and Reynolds which I'm sure will be key.
'Safe House' is released February 2012 and could be a surprise hit. Keep an eye out.
