'The Grudge 3' Review - Prepare To Be Grudged For The Third Time

Director: Toby Wilkins
Cast: Johanna Brady, Gil McKinny, Shawnee Smith, Emi Ikehata, Jadie Hobson, Beau Mirchoff
Plot: Grudge comes back to grudge people including a young family who move into the haunted Chicago apartment.

'The Grudge 3'......direct to DVD......being shown on the SyFy channel....it doesn't look promising does it? Apparently a third Grudge movie was released in 2009. I didn't know and after having watched 'The Grudge 3' I'm beginning to think they didn't know what they were making either. There are whole host of problems with this movie and you don't need to be Martin Scorsese to notice them.

The movie is basically about a family who are haunted by grudge girl and should really leave the haunted house they are staying in, but don't because of a curse and there is a girl in the same building who knows what to do about the curse because grudge girl is her sister and then some grudging happens to people in the house. Oh and grudge girl has a brother called grudge boy who sounds like a cat.

I wasn't expecting much from this and it was obviously going to be bad..but this bad! It is cheap, poorly made sequel to what wasn't an overly interesting concept to begin with. There isn't anything worth talking about on a technical level because there doesn't appear to have been much effort made when making it. The story is uninteresting, the characters are typical horror cut outs and the effects are jarringly bad at times. It's just poorly put together.

However at the heart of this God awful pile of crap there is something there. Something many movies like this possess - a inherent ability to create unintentional laughter in an audience. This movie is hilariously bad and if watched in a group of friends it can believe it not be made enjoyable. None of the scares land and usually result in laughs because they are so poorly executed - mainly due to the fact that the grudge girl just looks like sh*t. She is essentially a girl painted white, who makes a noise like an old man trying to poo...scary stuff.

Any horror the film makers attempt to craft are usually cheap jump scares or tacky gore effects that shamelessly rob from other, better movies like 'The Birds' and 'Friday The 13th'. There are actually points where there seems to have been effort to build suspense, but it's ruined by a complete lack of imagination or creativity. Before every kill you can literally guess the very next thing that will happen, but this is of course a low budget direct to DVD horror sequel so who cares, right?

'The Grudge 3' is pretty bad. So bad in fact that it becomes funny. A horror film should create visceral images that stay in your head and mess with your mind, not make you laugh out loud at a pale Japanese boy that sounds like a cat. There was clearly a devastating lack of effort in the making of this movie, which means it was just purely a cash in on a somewhat recognisable franchise. But regardless it just as crap movie.
