*SPOILERS*
What a finale. Everything has been building up to this episode and there was a massive amount of expectation for this closer to season 4. Did it deliver? Of course it did, this is 'Breaking Bad' a show which has never disappointed me and hopefully never will disappoint me. 'Face Off' brought a close to what has been a fantastic and arguably best season of 'Breaking Bad' in a way that was satisfying and gave us an actual conclusion.
'Face Off'. I didn't think that would end up having a double meaning, and what a horrifying double meaning it was. After a season of Gus always being one step ahead of Walt, the cold calculated chicken cook was finally beaten and a bomb took his face off. It was quite a way for this most intriguing of villains to be defeated because for the first time he didn't see what Walt had planned for him and his death came at the hands of ol' Tio. We the audience probably guessed what was going to happen, but the fact that Gus didn't is a huge win for Walt. His biggest yet in fact.
There were so many incredible shots and scenes prior to this explosion; Gus's walk to the nursing home and the stare down Tio gave Gus moments before he struck that bell for the last time were stand out scenes that were acted incredibly well. Much props to Mark Margolis who without saying a word made that scene oh so tense. Despite his hatred for Walt there was one person he hated that much more and that person, fortunately for Walt, was Gus so a joint plan against him seemed plausible and even Gus himself didn't see it coming.
Then there was of course another reveal that I certainly didn't see coming...Walt poisoned Brock!?!?!? What??? When? How? It's such a mind boggling suck punch of a twist that completely pushes Walt into the dislikeable character category. It's been a gradual shift over the course of the show, but after poisoning a small boy that can be little sympathy for Walt because he is unquestionably an evil mastermind. Just think of the joker laugh a couple of episodes ago that gave me shivers.
This was a spectacular end to a spectacular season of television that solidifies 'Breaking Bad's' position as the best show on TV. It's going to be a long wait for the next and final season to come around, but I'm almost certain they will make it worth the wait. I think it's fair to say despite the massive victory Walt had in this episode there will be plenty of misery for him and Jesse ahead.
